Look ahead: Top picks from Melissa Merli for the week to come
Ebertfest fave among undead
I can't wait to see the preternaturally pale and gifted Tilda Swinton, an Ebertfest guest in 2012 and '13, play a vampire in "Only Lovers Left Alive," directed by Jim Jarmusch. It's playing at the Art Theater Co-op, Champaign; for screenings, go to arttheater.coop/. I never get tired of vampire movies and novels unless they're bad. One of the most chilling: the Swedish "Let the Right One In," an Ebertfest 2009 pick.
UI spirit at 'Twilight'
I might just get my UI alumni spirit going Thursday night at the UI Summer Band's first "Twilight" concert of the season, at 7 p.m. on the UI Quad. It's always a mellow scene, with folks bringing lawn chairs and picnics. And there are always a few canine friends around. This concert — let's hope it doesn't rain — will pay tribute to the storied UI band program and its alumni. For more see the story inside today.
The art of transformed trash
If you're one of my steady readers, you know I love art and crafts made from recycled materials. Well, here's another exhibition featuring those things: "Outstanding in Our Field: Transforming Trash into Art," with seven central Illinois artists and three different live music shows. Opening reception is 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Indi Go, 9 E. University Ave., C. For more info, go to http://on.fb.me/1nzjFSP.
