Ask 'Mimi' Aug. 24, 2014

Who will you be rooting for during the 2014 Emmy Awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Monday on NBC?

Several actors, among them Louie C.K, as Louie in "Louie," for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series. I often relate to his hapless character, who often finds himself in uncomfortable situations. A brilliant show, "Louie" also is up for the outstanding comedy series, but I bet that goes to "Orange is the New Black," which has received a lot of buzz.

For outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, I'd go with Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham/Violet in the PBS series "Downton Abbey." And it'd be nice to see the hilarious comedy series "Portlandia" and its co-star Fred Armisen, who's up for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series, win something.

Mimi, how do you spend your Labor Day weekend?

Well, I used to go to my childhood home in Westville to spend time with my family and take in the Westville Labor Day parade, the longest, continually running Labor Day parade in the state. But the family home was sold in May and my parents now live in Mahomet.

When I lived in Danville, I also used to drive to Rossville and Hoopeston to shop at the flea markets and yard sales that crop up as part of the Hoopeston Sweet Corn Festival. If I don't get out of town this year, I'll try to take in the Champaign County AFL-CIO Labor Day Parade, starting at 10 a.m. Sept. 1 just south of Lincoln Square Village.

Is there an area entertainment venue you'd like to visit but haven't yet, Mimi?

Yes, the Kickapoo Landing at Kickapoo State Park. Today, Bones Jugs N Harmony plays there from 2 to 4 p.m. The Chambana group describes its music as novelty dance music. I describe it as fun.

Though I have not been to the Landing, I imagine taking in the beauty of Kickapoo and its ponds and noshing on some vittles from the Dockside Cafe. I have a lot of chances to get there: The Landing presents live music all summer from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays, through Oct. 24, when there will be a closing jam. For more information, visit By the way, don't forget to tip the band.
