40 North announces ACE winners

The winners of the 2015 ACE (Arts, Culture and Education) Awards, announced Thursday by 40 North 88 West:

Advocate: Carolyn Baxley, owner of Cinema Gallery, Urbana, for her commitment to regional emerging and established artists and for showcasing their work.

Artist: Nina Paley of Urbana, for her internationally recognized animated films, activism in the free culture movement and contributions to PaleGray labs, where digital designs are transformed into large-scale quilts.

Volunteer: Brenda Koenig of Champaign, the guiding force behind the C-U Folks & Roots Festival and for her commitment to folk and old-time music in Champaign County.

Business: Weiskamp Screen Printing, Champaign, for collaborations with community arts programs and initiatives.

Teacher: Rusty Clevenger, for integrating cultural experiences into his Urbana elementary classrooms through collaborations with arts organizations, venues and guest artists.

Student: Xuxa Rodriguez, a PhD candidate in art history at the University of Illinois, for her participation in cultural events and research in contemporary Latina and Afro-Latina artists.

Lifetime: Harry Breen, retired UI art professor, for his dedication to his craft and impact on students, community and the environment.

Judges Lisa Dixon, Erin Lippitz, Mike Ingram, Lawrence McGown and Cynthia Voelkl selected the winners from more than 110 nominations.

Tickets to the ACE Awards Celebration — to be held at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at City Center at Fat City Bar and Grill, Champaign — are $10 each in advance at 106 S. Neil St., C, or by calling 217-351-9841. Tickets at the door cost $15.
