CHAMPAIGN — One of C-U's newest forms of entertainment, Champaign Ladies Amateur Wrestling, will have its next show Friday night at the Highdive, 51 E. Main St., C.

Champaign Ladies Amateur Wrestling, or CLAW, will feature six new matches, eight new wrestlers and new moves, plus live music by the regional punk bands Bookmobile!, Los Despeinados, and Jorts during RAVECAST1.

CLAW Vice President Joanna Troutman, who also wrestles under the name "The Slice," describes CLAW and what it does as entertainment that requires athleticism.

"We're more of a DIY, punk-rock WWE, closer to how it was in the '80s and '90s than modern day," she said.

She and others here founded CLAW earlier this year. Their vision was to build an organization that empowers women, creates community and provides high-quality, female-fronted entertainment.

"We were really looking for a fun, creative and athletic outlet that embraces the absurd and creates a safe space for women to express themselves and be powerful," Troutman said.

The women in CLAW range in age from 25 to 45. So far, CLAW wrestling matches are only between CLAW members.

"We're not aware of any local or regional groups like ours," said Troutman, adding that to her knowledge CLAW is the first amateur wrestling group in Champaign-Urbana for women.

CLAW's previous shows have sold out. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and may be purchased at the Highdive or online.

The doors will open at 8 p.m. for the 9 p.m. show.
