C.U. Bands and Fans' Terry Brown chats with CHAWLA, a singer-songwriter who recently released a new EP called "Still Waiting":

When did you know you would be releasing an EP, and how long did it take you to get it from start to finish?

I decided I wanted to release my own solo record back in January. I spent the next few months coming up with a plan to figure out how to balance making the EP with being a full-time student, along with a schedule on when/how to release and promote it. I then began talking to Chris Steinmetz, owner of Stonecutter Records Recording Studio and my producer, about my vision for this EP, and we soon began recording in May. I'd say by October the EP was complete — recorded, mixed, mastered, artwork etc.

However, some of these songs, such as "Lullaby" and "Breathe in Me," were written back when I was in high school. So in a way, the process began when I was only 17 years old.

The lyrics to 'Still Waiting' are so interesting; how did this song come about?

"I'm Still Waiting for You" is one of those songs that taught me more about myself as I wrote it. It was initially just about a relationship that slowly and painfully fell apart and one that I'm not really sure I've ever fully recovered from. However, sometimes I wonder if in the chorus I'm calling out to the one who faded out from my life or calling out to someone new who could bring back the joy I had felt once. It's crazy how much my subconscious writes for me without me even noticing it.

What do you have coming up next and where do you see yourself in the next year?

I recently had my EP release show at Canopy, which turned out really well. There's no better feeling than playing my own music live, so I'm currently in the works of setting up shows here in Champaign and in Chicago. I've also started working on visual content, like a music video, to accompany the EP.

In a year I see myself as being active in the local live scene and hopefully collaborating with other talented musicians in the C-U. I've also got several original songs not on the EP, and I'm considering picking one and releasing it as a single. Stay tuned!
