Chorale plans holiday concert Dec. 9 in place of New Year's show

CHAMPAIGN — It's carols for The Chorale after years of New Year's concerts.

"New this year is a holiday concert that will take the place of the New Year's Eve event at the Virginia," said Director Julie Beyler.

"After 26 New Year's Eve concerts, we are enjoying preparing holiday music for the Dec. 9 concert. We're sure the audience will like the variety of music from The Chorale and our guest performers, the Sycamore Brass Quintet," she added.

Following the tradition of New Year's Eves shows, the concert will feature an audience sing-a-long tradition — accompanied by the brass quintet.

The Chorale performs its holiday concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 at Faith United Methodist Church in Champaign.

The new concert schedule has allowed the group to do something they've long wanted to do: a concert filled with music for the holidays, Beyler said.

Every year for 26 years, members of The Chorale have given up their New Year's Eve to entertain the community.

Now in its 36th season as a community choral group, The Chorale will perform a concert of uplifting choral music that includes both familiar and lesser-known holiday melodies.

Lullabies and madrigals will both take center stage as the group performs traditional favorites as well as more modern favorites.

Also, the Sycamore Brass Quintet will play a selection of their own selections before joining with the audience in a final sing-a-long of traditional Christmas carols.

Founded in 2012, Sycamore Brass Quintet together five horn players: Sal Percoco, Jessica Pearce, Robert Sears, Matthew Dixon and Matt Stratton, each of whom regularly performs in venues as varied as symphonies and local jazz, classical groups and churches.

Admission is $15 and goes toward scholarships that will be given to outstanding area high school seniors who plan to pursue music studies at the university level.

The Chorale will be embarking on a new schedule of two concerts per year.

Scholarships will be awarded at the May 5 concert, "Feel the Spirit."
