Parkland's 'Only You' full of 'unexpected surprises'

Parkland College's 27th annual student production is "Only You," a "quirky, funny, yet romantic urban fairytale" by Timothy Mason that premieres tonight. The cast includes Matt Christman, Maya Hammond, Zoe Dunn and Jarrod Finn. Director GENNIE APPLEBEE chatted with staff writer Paul Wood:

What made you chose to do 'Only You'? 'Young would-be lovers' sounds perfect for this production.

When I was in Chicago, I bought a lot of plays/scripts and looked through them. I read "Only You" and found it really funny and the characters to be relatable. It was also different from other plays that I have seen or read, and I thought it be would fun to challenge myself to do this play.

As director, what is your vision of the play?

To have it be relatable to real-life experiences with love and relationships. Funny, quirky and dramatic.

The New York Post said "There is a kind of dazzling silliness running through Timothy Mason's 'Only You' which is utterly disarming and bewilderingly beguiling." How do you keep up the energy level?

The cast already has a lot of energy, and I have them put that into their characters and keep it fast-paced.

How many people are in the cast?

Six.

Who plays Miriam on their first date? And Leo? Are there other important parts?

Maya Hammond plays Miriam, and Matt Christman plays Leo. All the characters play an important part, but Leo and Miriam are the main focus of the show.

Is the song "Only You" in this production?

Yes, by the Platters.

Does having a student director and an all-student staff make doing this more exciting?

It has been a fun process. The students have a lot of energy and are happy to be a part of the production.

Enjoyable or overly challenging?

There are lots of fun moments and there are times we laugh and joke to keep the energy up during rehearsal.

Anything else you can reveal?

"Only You" is a romantic comedy filled with lots of unexpected surprises. There will also be some singing in the show.
