From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Douglass Branch, families from the Champaign Unit 4 School District are invited to Parent Lab. Dinner and child care will be provided. Parent Lab is designed to teach parents how to help their children with schoolwork and improve their own literacy in the process. Parents get to work with Project READ tutors to become familiar with the same skills their kids and grandkids are learning in school.

At 7 p.m. Monday at the main library, learn how to get started with social media sites like Facebook and Twitter as part of the Getting Started with Tech series. This is a hands-on workshop using library laptops. Reservations are encouraged. Sign up at champaign.org/events or call 217-403-2070.

At both 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday at the main library, check out the Smarty Pants Big Balloon Show, a combination of magic, comedy and balloon creations inspired by classic Vaudeville.

The library is kicking off summer reading with a party. The event begins at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lewis Auditorium. Dance to Zecca Bom — one of C-U's hottest bands. They play music that's inspired by Brazilian soul and reggae. The lineup includes Robert Sena (MC), Eddie Quiroga (trombone), Jason Finkelman (congas), Ben Juday (guitar), Cody Jensen (keyboard), Gordon Kay (drums) and Charlie Harris (bass). Also, channel your inner musician with one of the instruments from the library's music equipment collection. Then sport a fancy costume with Krannert Center for the Performing Arts' mobile photo booth. Enjoy crafts and free ice cream, and don't forget to sign up for summer reading. This concert is sponsored by Larry and Margaret Jobe in honor of grandsons Arlin and Berk Orr. The summer reading program is supported by the Friends of the Urbana Free Library.
