Asmussen | At long last, Illini baseball gets well-deserved new facility

Dan Hartleb is too nice to say it. But I will.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Atkins family, Hartleb's Illinois baseball program is FINALLY moving to the top of the Big Ten when it comes to facilities.

Asmussen | Bowl-bound teams help Big Ten grow

What has happened to Big Ten football?

A year after going 7-1 in bowl games (thanks, Michigan), the conference has nine bowl ties. And it climbs to 10 if the Big Ten qualifies for the College Football Playoff (thanks, Michigan).

At this moment, seven Big Ten teams have reached the six wins needed to become bowl eligible.

Bob Asmussen's Big Ten Power Poll: Nov. 12, 2018

1. Michigan (1)

If the Wolverines can take care of business in the next two games, they will play Northwestern for the Big Ten title. Yeah, didn't see that coming.

2. Ohio State (2)

Nov. 11 Asmussen Top 25

Illinois football beat writer Bob Asmussen is a voting member of The Associated Press Top 25 panel. Here is this week's ballot:

Notes: 'I love the kid'

LINCOLN, Neb. — AJ Bush Jr. finally got to play on Nebraska's home field.

And it went well.

A member of the Cornhuskers in 2014-15, Bush set an Illinois school record for rushing by a quarterback. His 187 yards on 25 carries topped the 174 yards by Juice Williams in a 2008 game against Eastern Illinois.

Loss to Cornhuskers forces Illini into win-out scenario

LINCOLN, Neb. — One and done.

That was the message from Lovie Smith after Nebraska defeated his third Illinois football team 54-35 Saturday at the other Memorial Stadium.

The Illini dropped to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten.

To achieve the season-long goal to play in a bowl game, the Illini must sweep Iowa and Northwestern the next two Saturdays.

Asmussen | For Bush Jr., today's game at Nebraska is a homecoming of sorts

LINCOLN, Neb. — AJ Bush Jr. is going home. Sort of.

Not home home. That would be the Atlanta area, where he went to high school.

Bush returns today to the other Memorial Stadium. The one in Lincoln with the big red N on the side.

Nebraska's Memorial Stadium 'like no other place I've ever played'

LINCOLN, Neb. — Illinois senior Nick Allegretti knows what will happen when his team runs off the field today at Memorial Stadium: applause. From the visiting fans.

That doesn't happen everywhere else. Or anywhere else.

"You almost think they're being sarcastic," Allegretti said. "We were winning at halftime and they're complimenting you.

Game day Q&A: 'It was lots of hugs'

Hard to believe, but Dre Brown's 72-yard jaunt into the end zone against Minnesota was his first college score. It marked another milestone for the running back, who has come all the way back from two knee injuries. Illinois beat writer BOB ASMUSSEN sat down with the DeKalb product earlier in the week:
