Even in an era of specialization, multi-sport high school athletes aren't impossible to find. That's especially true in east central Illinois' smaller communities.

What Dawson Rogers is undertaking goes a step further.

Welter sets program record as Sages slowly but surely cruise

CHAMPAIGN — A historic moment for Monticello football coach Cully Welter is one he's not keen on remembering.

"I'm really upset with myself. I thought I coached a horrible game," Welter said after his Sages knocked off St. Thomas More 35-6 on a rainy, windy Friday of Illini Prairie Conference action. "Fortunately, we've got some pretty good players that overcame my ineptness."

Lee, Snyder lead area's top passing attacks into conference bout

CHAMPAIGN — The statistics are staggering — a 54.8 completion percentage, 760 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception.

Those are the combined passing figures of the area's two leading prep quarterbacks through just a pair of games apiece.

And they'll go head to head tonight.

Chargers hit wall at home

CHAMPAIGN — For Taylor Swords, early results indicated Centennial volleyball is headed in a positive direction.

But matches like Thursday's Big 12 Conference opener versus Bloomington proved there's still work to be done.

A multi-pronged Purple Raiders attack proved too potent for the Chargers to handle in a 25-17, 25-21 setback.

Urbana and Central change game time

CHAMPAIGN — A Week 4 prep football game between Urbana and Champaign Central will occur Saturday morning instead of Friday night, administrators told The News-Gazette.

The contest will occur at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, instead of the evening of Sept. 14, at Tommy Stewart Field.

Boys' soccer storylines: Fresh faces, new places for STM

CHAMPAIGN — St. Thomas More is seeking a happy middle ground.

James Johnson's Sabers boast a 6-3-1 ledger, including a clean sweep at the Peoria Christian Charger Classic last month. But STM's three defeats — all against Class 2A opponents — have come by a lopsided 17-1 margin.

Sages football climbs to No. 6 in AP Class 3A rankings

Monticelllo football continues its climb up the Associated Press Class 3A state football rankings, with coach Cully Welter's Sages moving two spots this week.

The latest polls, all eight of which came out Wednesday evening, included Monticello at No. 6 in 3A. That was a boost from the Sages' No. 8 spot a week prior, aided by a 52-7 drubbing of Chillicothe IVC last Friday.

Pieces to defend

Sabers energized in sweep

PAXTON — Lindsay Stalowy didn't feel her Paxton-Buckley-Loda volleyball team made enough noise or showed enough fire during Tuesday's match with reigning Class 2A state champion St. Thomas More.

Stan Bergman's Sabers didn't have that issue — and it rarely seems to come up with senior libero Haley Elam on the court.
