On the path to greatness, Bowie learns to cherish the journey

CHAMPAIGN — Alaina Bowie takes a measured approach — not just toward golf, but toward life as a whole.

Her golf coach at St. Thomas More acknowledges as much.

Alan Dodds describes the junior as "very much an intellectual" and "a deep thinker." He believes that out of the 700 to 800 shots Bowie took in the 2018 season, "there was probably only one I would have done differently."

Our rankings don't take a break. Over the previous few months, you've seen me rate 10 area programs in volleyball, football and boys' soccer each week. Now, we're moving along to the winter sports.

Warriors can't slow down host Trojans in state quarterfinal loss

MAROA — Tuscola football's seniors stood shoulder to shoulder on one of the 40-yard lines at Walter Boyd Field.

Nearly all of them shed tears as coaches and underclassmen rolled through the line to deliver hugs and words of appreciation.

STM volleyball rebounds, collects third place at state

NORMAL — Perhaps Stan Bergman’s athletes hadn’t quite moved beyond their most recent outing when they stepped onto the Redbird Arena hardwood on Saturday afternoon.

St. Thomas More volleyball would not be a back-to-back state champion. Pleasant Plains extinguished that dream the day prior.

Maroons look to wash away state drought in pool

CHAMPAIGN — The last time Champaign Central girls' swimming and diving sent a competitor to state was 2012 — coincidentally, the last time the Maroons won a team sectional plaque.

Can the Maroons turn the latter tide against tough foes like Centennial, Uni High and Danville during today's Centennial Sectional at Unit 4 Pool?

That remains to be seen.

Sabers fall short in their bid to repeat as state champions

NORMAL — Deja vu washed over St. Thomas More volleyball in two waves Friday afternoon.

The first arrived when the Sabers dropped the opening set of their Class 2A state semifinal match with Pleasant Plains at Redbird Arena. The outcome mimicked STM's start to last year's state championship match, in which it fell behind Quincy Notre Dame after a game.

Four area teams take shot at reaching state semifinals

The field of local football teams still vying for a state championship is whittled down to four. Here's a glance at each state quarterfinal game today involving an area program, courtesy preps coordinator COLIN LIKAS:
