There's nothing like the holidays to juice up the local music scene, and no venue is busier with musical goings-on this time of year than Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana. Just check all that's playing this week:

— Today at 3 p.m.

Frank's Faves: Movie explosions

"All right, I got somethin' to say. Yeah, it's better to burn out ... than fade away." — Def Leppard

I had one of my more aggravating recurring dreams the other night. And I woke up mad enough to smash my racquetball racquet into pixie sticks.

Frank's Faves: Thanksgiving rock songs

"Over the river and through the wood, to Grandfather's house we go ... Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done? Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!" — Lydia Maria Child

Frank's Weekend Faves, Nov. 18, 2018

Sure, Thanksgiving feasts and get-togethers are on top of most folks' agenda this week, but this is also a good time of year to remember those in our community who don't have as much to feel thankful for. With that in mind, The Iron Post in Urbana is hosting the annual concert to benefit the Eastern Illinois Foodbank on Monday.

Frank's Faves: World War I movies

"This is a war to end all wars." — Woodrow Wilson, 1917

"Only the dead have seen the end of war." — George Santayana, 1922

Gee, it was nice to spend a Veterans Day unspoiled by distracting debates over which football players were kneeling during the national anthem and whom or what was being either disrespected or protested by their doing so.

Here's something for local shutterbugs to focus on — the 2018 State of the Art: Photography Invitational opens Monday at Parkland College's Giertz Gallery in west Champaign.

Curated by modern-day Renaissance man Christopher Schneberger (whom you'll hear more about — and from — here in just a bit), the invitational show will feature images by Christine Carr, Antone Dolezal and Lara Shipl

Frank's Faves: Fateful-phone-call movies

"Hello, how are you? Have you been alright through all those lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely nights? That's what I'd say, I'd tell you everything if you pick up that telephone ... " — Electric Light Orchestra

I don't know about you, but weird stuff seems to happen all the time in my world.

My favorite local music concert this week? No surprise here. That would be hometown heroes REO Speedwagon's triumphant return to the Virginia Theatre in Champaign on Saturday. These guys really do keep pushin' on!

Yes, I've seen Kevin Cronin, Neal Dougherty, Bruce Hall and friends light up the stage on quite a few previous occasions. That's no less reason to want to see them again.

Frank's Faves: Epic movies

"The clock will tick away the hours one by one, then the time will come when all the waiting's done ... If it takes forever, I will wait for you." — Jacques Demy

I've always enjoyed good puppetry, and have even tried my hand(s) at it theatrically a few times in the past. It takes a special mix of skill, creativity and dexterity to make a a puppet come alive. Just ask Pinocchio — puppet theater has a long, storied history dating back to the Old World.
