Frank's Weekend Faves, July 15, 2018

Feel like you have at least one great film in you? Or at least 20 minutes or less of a decent one? If so, it's time to break out your movie camera — or smartphone, what have you. This year's New Art Film Festival is accepting entries now through Aug.

Frank's Faves: Animated Disney movies

"Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities, forget about your worries and your strife." — Phil Harris as Baloo in "The Jungle Book" (1967)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again — you just never know what will inspire a list of faves.

For as long I've lived in these parts, the Iron Post in Urbana has been a community institution for live local jazz. But if you're like me, and it's been too long since you've seen that for yourself, word is, the Post is hosting a couple of excellent reasons to get reacquainted this week.

Esther Rose will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Frank's Faves: Movies that get patriotism right

"I wouldn't give you 2 cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness and a little looking out for the other fella, too." — James Stewart in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939)

This isn't your parents' Christian music festival. But the sixth annual AudioFeed Music Festival this week at the Champaign County Fairgrounds isn't meant to be. It is, however, meant to rock. Hard, that is.

"All this feeling here inside, one word ain't enough." — Heart

"Except when that one word calls to mind a good movie." — Frank's Faves

I hadn't yet started writing this column a year ago when Ilene Silverman first opened The Gilbert Gallery in downtown Urbana. But as she prepares to celebrate her art gallery's first anniversary next week, you can bet I'm not going to miss that. Nor should you.

Frank's Faves: Dinosaur movies

"Oh, yeah. 'Oooh, ahhh,' that's how it always starts. Then, later, there's running and, um, screaming." — Jeff Goldblum in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" (1997)

OK, break's over! Time to get back to work bringing you the best — or at least my favorites — among all that the local arts & entertainment scene has to offer. And picking up where I left off two weeks ago, my open invitation for visually artistic faves was answered within five minutes of my return to work this past week with a call from Ruthie Counter at Parkland College in Champaign.

Frank's Faves: Movie downpours

"I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in and stops my mind from wandering where it will go ..." — The Beatles

Hi, everybody! Sorry we missed each other last week while I was on vacation. I sure could have used a few of you out in my garage during the latter part of my time off while embarking on the greatest downsizing project since the fall of the Roman Empire.
