Champaign man convicted of offering teen girl money to have sex with him

URBANA — A Champaign man convicted of trying to pay a teenage girl to have sex with him faces a maximum of seven years in prison.

A Champaign County jury on Wednesday convicted Jacinto Chavez, 43, of the 1300 block of Fairfax Drive of indecent solicitation of a child and obstructing identification for giving police a false name as they investigated the girl's allegations.

Two hospitalized after crash at southwestern Champaign County intersection

SEYMOUR — Two men were taken to area hospitals for injuries they received in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday morning in southwestern Champaign County.

Champaign County sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Sherrick said the crash between a pickup truck and a car happened at 9:30 a.m. at County Road 200 E and Monticello Road (1000 N). The intersection is about midway between Seymour and Ivesdale.

URBANA — A Rantoul man who allegedly possessed stolen property and a weapon in a home where he was staying last week remains in the Champaign County Jail.

Justin Mims, 31, who listed an address in the 1500 block of Collier Drive, was criminally charged Monday with being an armed habitual criminal, unlawful possession of weapons by a felon and theft.

The Urbana Police Department will be conducting its popular annual bicycle giveaway on Valentine's Day this year.

The event is open to citizens of Champaign, Urbana and surrounding communities. It begins at 10 a.m. and runs until noon or the bicycles are gone.

Champaign, Douglas sheriffs each awarding $500 scholarship for 2019-20

The Illinois Sheriffs' Association will award over $50,000 in college scholarships throughout the State of Illinois to students during the 2019-20 academic year.

The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only.

Douglas County Sheriff Joshua Blackwell and Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman will each award one $500 scholarship.

RANTOUL — Champaign County Crime Stoppers needs help finding the person or people who fired guns into two homes in Rantoul in January, damaging property only.

On Thursday, Jan. 17, Rantoul officers were sent to the 1300 block of Abram Drive, where they found three bullet holes in the siding of the home.
