Two accused in Champaign apartment burglaries in custody

URBANA — Two young men accused in connection with burglaries at a Champaign apartment building earlier this week remain in police custody.

Brandon D. Kelly, 18, who listed an address in the 200 block of East Hill Street, Champaign, and a 16-year-old male were each criminally charged in Champaign County Circuit Court on Wednesday.

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are looking for a man charged with shooting another person on Christmas Eve in Champaign.

Police identified Mario D. Turner, 38, whose last known address was in the 1400 block of Queens Way, as the person who allegedly fired on a man in a car in a parking lot in the 1400 block of North McKinley Avenue, Champaign, about 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 24.

Urbana man acquitted in 2016 killing sues over pretrial detention

URBANA — A young Urbana man acquitted of the 2016 murder of a Champaign woman is suing the city of Champaign and at least four of its police officers for depriving him of his freedom for six months.

The civil-rights lawsuit on behalf of Shamario D. Brown, 21, was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Urbana by Chicago attorney Shneur Nathan.

Guilty plea to cannabis charge nets prison time

URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted that he had cannabis in his underwear last spring when stopped by police has been sentenced to a year in prison.

In return for Roger Brown's guilty plea Monday to manufacture or delivery of 10 to 30 grams of cannabis, the state agreed to dismiss a more serious charge of unlawful use of weapons by a felon.

Charges against Urbana man dismissed

URBANA — Serious felony charges against an Urbana man were dismissed Monday at the request of his alleged victim.

Tyrone Franklin, 52, of the 2400 block of Prairie Green Drive, had been charged with home invasion, a Class X felony, and criminal trespass to residence in connection with a Nov. 5 incident at a home on North Champaign Street in Champaign.
