One last time, let me thank everyone for playing along with "Where Am I."

This one was easier than I would have predicted, but I shouldn't have been surprised that so many folks recognized a genuine landmark: Old Seven, as the bridge is known.

This is my last trip to share with you. I'm retiring on Friday.

I've enjoyed hearing from you all, residents of the towns I've driven through, expatriates from all over who share tales of their days here.

As with most of my job, it's been a good time, and I thank you all.

Come 5 p.m. Friday afternoon, this will be where I used to work.

The News-Gazette has been around for, what, 165 years? Lots of people have come and gone and the paper gets out every day but Christmas.

Champaign native in Munich lets family know she's safe

CHAMPAIGN — Richard Keane got a message from his daughter a little before noon Friday.

"Hey, family, I'm fine," said Catherine.

"Why wouldn't you be?" Richard Keane messaged back.

Because she was 10 minutes away from the scene in Munich where gunmen opened fire at a mall Friday, killing eight and wounding at least 10 others.

I'm really sorry about the windshield.

When I took a drive late on a Saturday in southwest Champaign, with the camera on the dashboard, I couldn't actually see how bad the windshield was until that early evening light hit it, and by then, I was committed to the drive. No window cleaner available.

If Slip F-18 and the Busted Flush mean anything to you, there's a pleasant surprise in the digital offerings of the Champaign Public Library.

The TRAVIS McGEE series is available in the library's "My Media Mall" digital service.

The heavy holiday traffic kept the Where Am I traffic down last week.

I was in downtown Rossville, and while there were fewer answers than usual, nearly everyone was correct.

The first correct answer came from Jennifer Danner of Hoopeston, about 12 minutes after the video went live.

The first — and only — person from Rossville to answer was Ashley Cornell.

A significant anniversary passed virtually unnoticed late last month.

There it was, a short Associated Press story, at the bottom right corner of page 1, about something that would become official the next day, June 27, 2003:

"People fed up with unwanted telemarketing can sign up ... for a national do-not-call list that will block many sales calls."

It's tough to shoot video in downtown Paxton without giving it away, what with the landmark buildings and the streetlight banners.

Based on last week's responses, I'd have to say it's almost impossible.

Chad Barringer of Savoy pounced, getting the first correct answer five minutes after "Where Am I" went live last Monday.

But he wasn't alone.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that BRUISER the dog hates fireworks.

Hates them. With a passion stronger than wildfire, as the saying goes.

Thanks for reader CINDY DORNER for the Thundershirt and melatonin suggestions. The Thundershirt doesn't help Bruiser, unfortunately, but I've heard others have success with them.
