Fire damages bar in Hoopeston

A bar in Hoopeston was heavily damaged by a fire early Sunday morning.

Hoopeston firefighters found thick smoke rolling from the front of the building at BZZZ's Place at 306 East Main Street when they arrived shortly after 1:30 a.m.

Coroner: Woman killed in Douglas County crash died of blunt force trauma

TUSCOLA — The Douglas County coroner said an autopsy showed a woman killed in a crash near Camargo on Wednesday morning died from blunt force trauma.

However, Joe Victor said further tests are being run to see if Joan Biebel, 66, may have suffered from an underlying medical condition that would have caused her to veer into the oncoming lane of traffic and sideswipe a truck.

Urbana man killed in crash

Update Friday 8:18 a.m.

MAHOMET — The Champaign County Coroner says an Urbana man was killed Thursday night in an accident about a mile north of Mahomet.

Coroner Duane Northrup says 29-year-old Lyle Owens died at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana around 8:10 p.m. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.

Winter weather advisory remains in effect

A winter weather advisory is in effect for most of East Central Illinois until 10 a.m. Friday.

The advisory includes Champaign, Coles, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby, and Vermilion counties.

Mixed precipitation is expected with total snow accumulations of up to two inches, along with a light glaze of ice.

GEORGETOWN — State and local authorities are investigating a house fire early Friday morning that killed two people and sent a Georgetown police officer to the hospital.

Boil order for all of Villa Grove

The entire city of Villa Grove is under a boil order until further notice due to a large water main break. No word on when the order might be lifted.

Winter weather advisory for all of East Central Illinois

The National Weather Service says all of East Central Illinois will be under a winter weather advisory starting Tuesday night.

The advisory will be in effect until noon Wednesday and includes Champaign, Coles, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Ford, Iroquois, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby, and Vermilion counties.

UPDATE: Philo trustee killed in Indiana crash

A longtime Philo village trustee was among three people killed this week in a fiery, five-vehicle crash in southern Indiana.

John W. Mumma, 67, had served on the board of the Champaign County village of 1,442 for at least 30 years, said Village President Larry Franks.

“During my time as mayor, I have considered him to be my right-hand man,” Franks said.

Champaign man killed in head-on collision on I-57 near Bradley

BRADLEY — A Champaign man was killed Monday night in a head-on crash with a semitrailer truck in Kankakee County.

Illinois State Police said about 7:30 p.m., Oscar Valdovinous, 23, was southbound on Interstate 57 about 2 miles north of Bradley when he lost control of his car.

It went through the median, then into the northbound lanes, where it hit a semi head-on.
