UPDATED: Winter weather advisory extended to more counties

9:15 a.m. Update

The National Weather Service has extended the winter weather advisory to more counties in East Central Illinois.

The advisory now includes Champaign, DeWitt, Macon, Piatt, and Vermilion counties. It will be in effect until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire destroys house northeast of Urbana; 2 sent to hospital

URBANA — A house northeast of the city was destroyed by a fire early Monday morning.

Carroll Fire Protection District Chief Jim Green said firefighters were called to a house in the area of 2310 North High Cross Road. When they arrived flames were showing through the roof of the single-story structure. Green said it appears the fire started on the front of the house.

Early-morning fire heavily damages church in northeast Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — A fire significantly damaged a church on the northeast side of the city early Monday morning.

Deputy Fire Marshal Randy Smith said crews were called at about 3:05 a.m. to Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 808 E. Bradley Ave.

Winter storm warning issued

A winter storm warning will be in effect for a part of East Central Illinois on Saturday.

The National Weather Service said heavy snowfall is expected in Champaign, Macon, Piatt and Vermilion counties. DeWitt County is under the same warning from 6 p.m. today to 6 p.m. Saturday. A total of 4 to 6 inches of snow is possible and winds are also expected to gust around 35 miles per hour.

Urbana middle, high school Principals say fights decreasing

URBANA — After a slew of discipline issues at Urbana's middle and high schools that led to major changes in administration, principals at both schools say things have improved, partly due to procedural changes and partly because students and staff are learning the new discipline system.

UPDATED: Dense fog advisory extended

8:45 a.m. Update

The National Weather Service has extended the dense fog advisory until noon today for most of East Central Illinois.

The advisory includes Champaign, Coles, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby, and Vermilion counties.

Meanwhile, Ford and Iroquois counties remain under a dense fog advisory only until 9 this morning.

The National Weather Service said much of East Central Illinois is under a winter storm warning.

Winter storm watch for Shelby County

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Shelby County from Friday evening through late Saturday night.

The weather service says there could be heavy snow in that area, with 5 to 7 inches possible. So expect hazardous travel conditions as a result of that storm.

Fire damages Urbana home

An Urbana fire official says a blaze early Tuesday morning significantly damaged a home on the city's southeast side.

Fire Marshal Phil Edwards says crews were called to the 2300 block of East Pennsylvania Avenue at around 3:30 a.m.
