Champaign County Zoning Board recommends approval of solar farm rules

The Champaign County Zoning Board of Appeals has recommended approval of the rules for solar farms in the rural part of the county.

Director of Planning and Zoning for the county John Hall says that the board Thursday night voted 4-2, with Marilyn Lee and Jim Randol voting no. The rules will now go before the Environment and Land Use Committee next Thursday night.

Monticello man dies in dump truck accident

CERRO GORDO — A Monticello man was one of two victims killed in an accident Monday involving two dump trucks in western Piatt County.

Piatt County Coroner Troy Dunn said Kenneth Allen, 65, of Monticello, died in the crash about 5:20 p.m. Monday on Illinois Route 105 at Northeast County Line Road, which is the Macon-Piatt county line.

UPDATED: Hays leaving Legislature early for private-sector job

An area state representative who was scheduled to leave office at the end of his term in January announced Friday he is leaving the General Assembly early.

Republican Chad Hays of Catlin said he has accepted a job in the private sector as the Executive Director of Crosspoint Human Services in Danville. His last day serving the 104th district will be Sept. 7.

Chrisman woman killed in crash on Friday night

The Champaign County Coroner says a Chrisman woman was killed in a crash on Friday night in Edgar County.

Coroner Duane Northrup says 84-year-old Helen Bonwell was pronounced dead of multiple traumatic injuries just after 12 a.m. Saturday.

Northrup says Bonwell was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, which was reportedly hit by another vehicle.

Watseka couple killed in head-on collision

Illinois State Police say that a Watseka couple was killed in a head-on collision in that city Sunday afternoon.

Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum said John and Reta Dowling, both 84, died in the accident.

Hot, dry May sets new temperature record in C-U

CHAMPAIGN — If it seemed hotter than usual last month, you were on to something: State climatologist Jim Angel said average temperatures in Champaign-Urbana were above normal every day in May, making for a new record.

Angel said the average temperature for the month overall was 71.1 degrees, just breaking the previous record of 70.7 degrees set in 1977.

Champaign County sheriff details 'stranger danger' incident

CHAMPAIGN — Authorities are investigating a report of a man attempting to entice a teenage girl to enter his vehicle.

Champaign County Sheriff Dan Walsh said the girl was jogging around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Dobbins and Roland drives in northwest Champaign when a man allegedly pulled up near her several times and tried to initiate conversation.

Ousted sanitary district board president to serve until replacement named

URBANA — The head of the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District said Friday that although the district board's president was not reappointed Thursday night by the Champaign County Board, he can still serve until a replacement is named.

Executive Director Rick Manner said that while board President Jerry Lyke's term runs only through the end of May, he won't leave until he's replaced.
