Charges dismissed against man accused in January robbery, shooting in Urbana

URBANA — Charges against a Champaign man accused of being involved in a January armed robbery and shooting outside an Urbana house that left two women injured have been dismissed after the robbery victims declined to cooperate with prosecutors.

UPDATE: Heritage teacher and Villa Grove woman died in Douglas County crash

NEW  9:45 a.m. Saturday

Douglas County Coroner Joe Victor has identified the second person killed in a car crash near Villa Grove Friday afternoon as Kristine Trudeau.

Ms. Trudeau, 66, of Villa Grove, was pronounced dead at the scene. Victor said an autopsy was being conducted Saturday morning.

Former clerk Hulten takes job with Illinois Manufacturers Association

URBANA — Former Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten's new job is a newly created position at the Illinois Manufacturers Association.

The group said Monday that Hulten will be its vice president of external affairs, with duties that include overseeing communications and advocacy efforts.

Challenges filed on nominating petitions of Champaign, Danville candidates

CHAMPAIGN — Challenges have been filed against the nominating petitions of candidates for the April 2019 election in both Champaign and Danville.

In Champaign, the clerk's office said Chris Beaird is challenging the petitions of Kenton Elmore, who is running for an at-large seat on the city counicl.

UPDATE: No one injured in house fire in north Champaign

UPDATE, 1:35 p.m. Thursday:

CHAMPAIGN — No one was hurt but two people were displaced after flames ripped through a bedroom of a one-story home Thursday on the city's north side.

Champaign Deputy Fire Marshal Randy Smith said crews were called to 1308 N. Harris Ave. about 10:50 a.m. When they arrived, they saw flames and heavy smoke coming from a window.

Champaign school board, teachers union both ratify new contract

CHAMPAIGN — Unit 4 kindergarten class sizes will be capped at 24 next year and teachers will have twice as much time on their own during institute days according to the terms of a three-year contract that was formally approved Tuesday night.
