Man dies in house fire in Gifford

GIFFORD — The Champaign County coroner has identified a man who died in a house fire Wednesday afternoon on Gifford's south side.

Duane Northrup said Shane Rasor, 42, was pronounced dead at Carle Hospital at 5:49 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

New round of bids set for replacing roof of Juvenile Detention Center

URBANA — Champaign County's Juvenile Detention Center could have a new roof by the end of the summer.

The Champaign County Board's facilities committee spent Tuesday night talking about updating the center's roof.

Centennial renovation budget gets $8 million increase

CHAMPAIGN — The price tag for improvements at Centennial High School has gone up by more than $8 million.

Following an hourlong discussion during a special meeting Monday night, the Champaign school board voted 7-0 to increase the budget for the Centennial project by $8.193 million.

Champaign's Salem Baptist sets annual Friends and Family Day on Sunday

CHAMPAIGN — The Salem Baptist Church in Champaign will host its 26th annual Friends and Family Day this weekend.

This year's event is set for 11 a.m. Sunday at the church, 500 E. Park St.

The featured speaker will be the Rev. Claude E. Shelby Sr., senior pastor of the Salem congregation, followed by songs of praise by the church's choir.

Urbana man arrested after being found with gun in Douglass Park

CHAMPAIGN — An Urbana man has been arrested after allegedly being found with a handgun at Douglass Park.

According to a Champaign police report, officers were called to the 900 block of North Fourth Street at 3:58 p.m. Thursday after receiving a report of an armed man in that area who was walking into Douglass Park in the direction of Booker T. Washington STEM Academy.
