Champaign Co. Zoning Board OKs couple's special-use permit for horse stable

URBANA — A rural Pesotum couple plan to start up a horse stable, complete with an indoor arena, southwest of the village.

The Champaign County Zoning Board voted 4 to 0 Thursday night to approve a special-use permit for Fields of Grace Stable, at 683 County Road 100 N, also known as the Parkville Road.

UPDATE: Vehicle and building hit by gunshots in west Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police say no person was apparently hit by gunfire Wednesday night that did damage a vehicle and an apartment balcony.

Police went to the 800 block of South Mattis Avenue about 7:25 p.m. for a call of a vehicle burglary in progress. While there, they received reports of shots being fired in the area.

Champaign County Board approves proposed solar farm near Homer

URBANA — The Champaign County Board gave final approval Tuesday for a proposed solar farm planned east of Homer.

Whether it actually gets built now comes down to the luck of the draw.

Police investigating armed robbery in northwest Urbana

URBANA — Police are investigating an armed robbery over the weekend in which shots were fired.

According to a Urbana police report, officers were called to the 1200 block of Brookstone Court at 10:21 a.m. Saturday.

State adds $400K to Human Kinetics Park project

CHAMPAIGN — A $400,000 state grant will go a long way toward improvements at a park on Champaign's north side.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources awarded the grant to the Champaign Park District for the development of Human Kinetics Park at 1501 N. Market St.

Money from the grant will pay for outdoor sports fields and courts, a path system, a shelter and a playground.

Police: Officer smelled pot, saw empty gun case

URBANA — A traffic stop led to a weapons arrest in Urbana Saturday morning.

According to a police report, an officer pulled over a vehicle at Lincoln and Bradley avenues at 11:15 a.m. Saturday for a traffic violation.

Proposed solar farm near Homer heads to final Champaign County Board vote

URBANA — Another solar farm proposal took a step forward Thursday night.

The Champaign County Board's Environment and Land Use Committee voted 5-0 to recommend granting a special-use permit to Atlanta-based SolAmerica Energy LLC for a 2-megawatt solar farm on 14.6 acres east of Homer, west of the Vermilion County line and north of the sewage treatment plant.

Champaign County Board facilities committee gets firsthand look at jails

URBANA — Champaign County's new sheriff and new county board leadership have begun the process of addressing the needs of an aging jail built in 1980 and a second jail, built in 1996, that is bursting at the seams to meet modern needs.

On Tuesday, Sheriff Dustin Heuerman and his staff led the board's facilities committee on a tour of the downtown and satellite jails.
