PAXTON – Ashley Marcotte was a well-liked and accomplished student at Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School and a published poet and devoted family member in her private life.

By all accounts, she was a special person who is greatly missed.

Rice, Johnson do their part to set up Big 12 battle

CHAMPAIGN – Centennial never trailed in its 62-48 Class 3A regional semifinal victory against Urbana.

But that doesn't mean it came easily.

And it all started with senior Tyler Johnson, who hit two three-pointers out of the gates.

Bus trouble, turnovers hamper Sabers

PAXTON – St. Thomas More coach Todd Anderson won't blame it on the weather, but icy roads almost cost the Sabers a chance at playing Tuesday night in their 43-40 loss to Watseka in the Sangamon Valley Conference tournament.

Parents helped the players reach the game, the first car arriving in Paxton with the five starters and one bench player – six players, no coach.

Paxton-Buckley-Loda on SVC mission

PAXTON – Kendall Cox had 28 points and made 11 of 14 free throws, including 9 of 10 in the final minute, and Paxton-Buckley-Loda beat Momence 64-52 in boys' basketball Friday night.

The win fortified PBL's stranglehold on the Sangamon Valley Conference, moving the team to 6-0. Momence, St. Joseph-Ogden and Watseka all have two losses.

Sabers grind way to title

CHAMPAIGN – Matched up against one of the state's top teams – and possibly the best player in Illinois as well – St. Thomas More responded with the heart of a scrappy fighter.

And the bloody nose to prove it.

PBL shows composure

PAXTON – Dakota DeMoss scored 19 points and Kendall Cox added 16 as Paxton-Buckley-Loda beat St. Thomas More 59-43 in a Sangamon Valley Conference boys' basketball game Friday.

The Panthers fell behind 9-2 but rallied for a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
