Puddle-wonderful Homer Lake
It's not quite spring yet, but it sure felt like it Saturday at Homer Lake in Homer.
I'd never been there, but my sweetheart swore it'd be fun. He was right.
We pulled on our rubber boots, borrowed our favorite dog and headed to Homer. It was warm but overcast, which meant we didn't see many people. It felt like far less people were there than would've been at Lake of the Woods in Mahomet, although that could have just been because of the weather.
It was wet, there, too. We had to turn around from several trails because they were flooded. Both my companions appreciated squelching through the mud and looking for wildlife (the dog was especially interested in the frogs). I appreciated the rows of big, old trees left over from the forest preserve's former life as a tree nursery. It felt romantic in a historical sort of way. I can't wait to go back.
The whole morning reminded me of the line from this e.e. cummings poem: "when the world is mud-
luscious ... and it's/ spring/ when the world is puddle-wonderful."
