As many readers already know, local chocolate maker Dan Schreiber died suddenly last week.

Schreiber's memorial service is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at Prairie Fruits Farm north of Urbana.

You can also join Dan's friends in remembering him with the Flatlander Fund, which will tackle setting up a certified community kitchen for locals to use.

This e-mail from Laurence Mate, a friend of Dan's, included more information about the fund:

“As most of you will know, Daniel Schreiber died this past week.  In addition to being a good friend, he was an enormously dedicated and gifted chocolate-maker.  In just one brief year, he went from making his first batch of chocolate in his home, which was very good, to setting up a 'chocolate factory,' where he was making some of the best chocolate in the world.  And that’s not just my opinion. ...

"To do what I can to see that Dan’s dreams don’t die with him, I am working with many other people who loved him to start the Flatlander Fund in his memory, with the aim of setting up and supporting a certified community kitchen that could be used by entrepreneurs like Dan who want to create food 'with a sense of place.'”
