Local guitarists to kick off Ellnora festival two days early

Local guitar heroes will kick off Ellnora The Guitar Festival — two days before it opens.

The Timmy D and Blind Justice Ignite Pre-Festival Local Heroes Night will start at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3, a Tuesday, at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Ellnora opens there on Sept. 5.

Admission to Local Heroes Night is free, while entrance to the Ellnora/Krannert Center’s 2013-’14 season opening night party, starting at 6 p.m. Sept. 5, a Thursday, is only $5 per head.

At the pre-festival event, local guitarists who Krannert says represent the best of Champaign-Urbana’s music scene will perform. Tim Donaldson of Timmy D and Blind Justice curated the lineup; Krannert says the event promises a high-energy night of rock standards and original music.

In addition to Blind Justice, a Texas and British blues-influenced band, other performers will include Brandon Washington, Gloria Roubal & Paul Sabuco, David Howie & Lou DiBello, The Diva & The Dude/Kathy Harden & Andy Baylor, Tim Frazier, Megan Johns, Michael Carpenter of The Decadents, Justin Larkin & Christopher Kunz, Dyke Corson, and Kenna Mae Riess.

“Local Heroes Night celebrates the grand rock band tradition that has thrived in Champaign-Urbana since the 1960s,” said Rebecca McBride, who grew up in C-U (McBride’s Drugs stores) and is Krannert’s senior associate director.

“Every C-U music lover will appreciate this tribute to our community’s rock ‘n’ roll spirit as we rev up to the start of Ellnora The Guitar Festival 2013,” she said in a news release.

In the same sense of community pride, The Art Theater Co-op will present Champaign resident Robert Zimmerman’s documentary, “Out of Nowhere,” about the early rock music scene in C-U, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4, at the Art Theater Co-op, 126 W. Church St., C.
