Just curious more than anything.
Where were you listening/ or watching when the Illini upset #1 Indiana at the Assembly Hall?
What was your reaction when Tyler Griffey hit that famous layup?
I would be interested in some of those stories.
Thanks!
Since the mid-90s, I had only missed seeing, watching, or listening to radio 2 Illini basketball games. The first was when we played Purdue- I was in Europe at the time. The second? It was this very game against Indiana. I was at Jobing.com Arena in Phoenix seeing the Blackhawks take on (and demolish) the Coyotes. All of a sudden in the 1st Period, my phone started going off incessantly asking me if I saw that finish and whether I could believe the Illini somehow managed to beat Indiana. Ugh... So this will go down as the day that I somehow managed to miss one of the greatest wins in Illinois history. Go figure...
At least, I will always remember where I was when when Illinois beat Arizona in the Elite 8 (Back home for the weekend from college, bouncing off the walls like a lunatic in our family room after being on the verge of tears)
I was watching the game on television. At the 12 minute mark in the second half, my brother called. We were talking about other things while Illinois starting coming back and I was trying to watch the game while on the phone. My brother is not an Illinois fan, so I had to politely end the conversation at the 1:30 mark at the end of the game, and hope for the miracle comeback to actually happen, which it did! I was watching when Griffery made the lay-up, and the fans stormed the court. Wow, it was great to see!
We were on a Cruise of the coast of Mexico. We turned the TV on in the room just in time to see the last 30 secs. of the game. Seems like we jump so hard we rocked the ship. So obviously when we came back and landed in Indy on Saturday, I proudly walked through the airport with my Illini jacket on.
My story is also one of not watching.....
I was playing basketball in rec league, finished the game and wanted to text my friend that I iced the game with some free throws. I looked at my phone and I had a text that read only "Holy s&$t"! I knew right there that I had missed something great.
P.S. When the replay of the game was on the Big Ten network this weekend, I sat down and watched the whole game!
I had to be at a meeting and caught only the last 3 minutes onTV, but it turned out that I saw the point of the victory. I later watched a replay. I was at Assembly Hall for EJ's shot, and also the win over Wake Forest, which I felt was mostly no contest.
NaplesIllini
I was standing in the 3 rd row of C section. Got so excited I left my binoculars under the seat. Called Assembly hall the next day to see if they found them. They said it would take some time since there was so much stuff left behind. I'm hoping some great Illini fan brings them to me tonight.
I was in C 39 an had the all mighty privilege to be sitting next to 6 Indiana students the whole game! They were extremely loud, rude, and everything you could expect from a HOOISER fan the entire game! So as we made our run towards the end of the game it got all quiet next me so I asked them what was wrong, and they proceeded to say who’s number 1? Blah blah!!!! Needless to say I got the last word and snapped a picture of them after Tyler made the lay-up and as you would expect from them I received the middle finger and 6 sad faces!
I was standing on Bourbon Street with Hurricane in hand. I just happened to notice one of the bars had the game on and the score was tied. Stepped in to watch Griffey break to the basket and the rest is history. Ordered another Hurricane then continued my community service efforts to distribute beads to those with needs.
Go Illini!
I was sitting in my recliner sound asleep. I had fallen asleep at the 4 or 5 minute mark with the Illini down 10 or 12. And, not showing much signs of a comeback I might add. When I woke up the fans were on the court and the celebration was on. I rewound my DVR, and watched the last 4 minutes and found out what had happened.
