On the road

I'm writing this on the road -- from a hostel near Harpers Ferry, WV. My friend Mark and I are completing a section of the Appalachian Trail from 80 miles south of Harpers Ferry to 40 miles north.

So far, so good except that we are racing the rain. Perhaps it's from Rita, perhaps not. But there's an 80 percent chance of rain here tomorrow afternoon which makes for slippery footing and a heavier backpack. Mine is already too heavy, stuffed with lots of food and Gatorade.

Our hike so far has been relatively uneventful. But that doesn't mean we're not hurting. Both of us are having some foot problems but we'll get through them.

We heard the Illini had a tough day Saturday and that the Bears did no better Sunday. We took what is called a "zero day" today -- no hiking -- and drove into Baltimore to see a baseball game (Red Sox versus Orioles) at Camden Yards. Great place to see baseball. More on all of this when we get back.

Hope everything is swell in Illinois. Blagojevich still the governor?
