Looking like a non-white Christmas

The long-range forecasts suggest virtually no chance of a white Christmas in Champaign-Urbana this year.

The Weather Channel's 10-day forecast shows high temperatures in the 30s and 40s and only a couple possibilities of rain. Christmas Day is forecast to be partly cloudy with a high of 35.

The one day in there that could present a chance is Friday the 23rd.

AccuWeather's forecast is similar, with a Christmas Day high of 39 and a low of 18. Its forecast for the 23rd says only that it will be cloudy.

The National Weather Service says that only three times in the last 11 years has C-U had a white Christmas (defined as at least an inch of snow on the ground). In 2000 we had 6 inches of snow. And there was 8 inches in both 2002 and 2010.

Interestingly, C-U's record high on Christmas Day is 62 degrees in 1982. A year later we had the record low, minus 15.
