Local history: Icy weather 100 years ago and the last Elite Eight tournament at Huff Gym

In 1912, the Urbana rural route carriers were able to get to only a part of their route yesterday and did not even make an attempt today because the country roads are so bad. Several of the carriers report that their horses are in bad shape, the result of having their legs cut by the ice and the half-frozen roads.

In 1962, a tidal wave of emotion — generated by high school students — will hit Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois campus Friday with the first session of the Elite Eight basketball tournament. More than 8,000 students will bring to the community the excitement that comes only once a year. But only 5,000 will have tickets to the sessions at Huff Gym. Gov. Otto Kerner is expected at Saturday’s games. This is the last year Huff will host the tournament, as it moves to the sparkling Assembly Hall next year.
