Local history

In 1910, opposition to the extensive projects being considered by the University of Illinois has begun to develop. The normal schools of Illinois, led by the normal school in Normal, have launched a campaign against establishment of a central teachers’ training school at the UI as proposed by President James.

In 1910, members of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees listened for almost eight hours yesterday to plans that, if realized, would put the UI at the top of publicly endowed universities. The total requests of the various departments amount to more than $4 million, which is twice what they got from the Legislature in the last biennium.

Local history

In 1910, representatives of local real estate interests are in Chicago today to meet with the Illinois Central Railroad regarding the purchase of a shop site near the south yards in Champaign. Negotiations for the removal of the round house from its present site to the vicinity of the south yards have been in progress several times.

Local history

In 1910, today the two 500-horsepower boilers recently installed at the Champaign power plant were pressed into service. The boilers increase the horsepower available for interurban and lighting purposes to 1,500 horsepower and will prevent a recurrence of a tie-up as was caused the other night just at the supper hour.
