In 1912, there is a shortage of milk hereabouts, due to the heat wave. The near-famine reached its height Wednesday when the milk supply for the city was about 350 gallons short. Hurried calls were made to Chicago, Bloomington, Peoria and Effingham, and those cities were asked to help Champaign-Urbana. But all apparently were in the same boat.

In 1912, baseball teams from the Champaign and Urbana city councils will play a charity game at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at League Park for the benefit of Burnham Hospital. Alderman Armstrong urged all members of the Champaign team to meet at 5 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for practice.

In 1912, Chief of Police Keller and Officer Dodsworth arrested Warren L. Smith for keeping a disorderly house and later found that Smith had a quantity of ground opium on him. Smith, of 22 S. Oak St., is supposed to be a confirmed opium fiend. He is smoking the narcotic poison with tobacco in self-manufactured cigarettes.
