For those who are wondering -- and I know they are, I've gotten calls about it -- the "Candlestick Lane" tradition will continue this year in east Urbana. The folks on Grant Place, just southwest of the intersection of Washington Street and Philo Road, will formally light up Candlestick Lane at 6 p.m. Saturday. There will be a brief ceremony, complete with the "torch-bearer" who lights each home on the block.
This is at least the 46th year (maybe the 47th) for the tradition that began as a house-decorating contest sponsored by Illinois Power Co. (Those were the days before conservation, when power companies actually encouraged you to add to their load).
Candlestick Lane homes will be illuminated every night between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. through Dec. 31.
