The film awards season officially kicked off Thursday night with the 18th Annual Critic’s Choice Awards given by the members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association. These awards have served as a bellwether for the Oscars in the past, and if that holds true this year as well, the Academy Awards will be spread out among a wide variety of films.

Ben Affleck bounced back after being snubbed by the Academy earlier in the day in not being nominated for Best Director to take home that award while his film Argo was named Best Picture.  As expected Daniel Day-Lewis won the Best Actor award for his work in Lincoln, while the movie was also recognized for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Score.  Jessica Chastain was named Best Actress for her role of an obsessed CIA agent in Zero Dark Thirty while the film also won for Best Editing.

Other multiple winners include Silver Linings Playbook with four awards, Skyfall with three and Anna Karenina and Life of Pi with two. Jennifer Lawrence had a big night on her own as she was recognized three times, once as Best Actress in a Comedy, again as Best Actress in an Action Film and finally as part of the Best Ensemble for Playbook.

Next up are the Golden Globes, handed out by the Hollywood Foreign press and it will be interesting to see if their awards match those of their counterparts here in the States
