Is your phone -- or your phone service -- a perfect 10?

Is your phone -- or your phone service -- a perfect 10?

This is entirely unscientific. It has no meaning whatsoever. It’s a tiny sample.

But it was fun.

Went out among some cool people on Friday evening in downtown Champaign and started asking four questions:

  • What kind of cell phone do you have?
  • How would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10?
  • Who is your cell service provider?
  • How would you rate your provider on a scale of 1 to 10?

Everyone I asked had a cell phone. It’s not really that long ago when that would have been an amazing statistic all by itself.

Anyway, here’s what I found:

  • The most popular phones were from LG (with several models) with seven, followed closely by RIM’s BlackBerry at six. iPhones were next at three, followed by Palm, Samsung and Motorola with two each.
  • Five people rated their phones a perfect 10: two BlackBerrys, one iPhone, one Motorola and one Samsung. Overall, the top-rated phones were Motorolas, with an average score of 9.5. Palm and Samsung both averaged 9. The iPhone averaged 8.7, LGs 7.8 and BlackBerry 7.7.
  • Verizon was the carrier for more than half – 12 – of the 22 people I asked. Sprint was in second, AT&T third (the three iPhones), and T-mobile and U.S. Cellular brought up the rear with one each.
  • The one T-mobile customer ranked that company’s service 10; the U.S. Cellular customer called that company a 9. The average satisfaction score for Verizon was 8.4; for Sprint, 7.8; and for AT&T, 6.
  • Overall, phones were rated higher than providers, but not by much. The average score for a phone was 8.27; for a provider, 8.04.
  • Nobody had a Droid. (I didn’t answer my own questions, but my family has in the last week added four Droids – moving from an LG, a Motorola, a BlackBerry and a Palm – and so far it’s a pretty great phone, with some drawbacks. More on that to come.)

Pictured below are the last four phones I've used. Palm Treo, Motorola Q, BlackBerry Storm and now the Motorola Droid.

I’d love to read your answers:

  • What kind of cell phone do you have?
  • How would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10?
  • Who is your cell service provider?
  • How would you rate your provider on a scale of 1 to 10?

Thanks for taking part. Windows Mobile sure looks a lot different than it did on my Q. What are your primary uses for yours?
