News Talk 1400 WDWS First Word w/ Ron Zook Week 3

Nice to see our Illini win a game at the new and improved Memorial Stadium.  However, not all was pretty in that game.  At least they didn't look like Ohio State against Ohio, but still, hopefully the Illini can use next week against an aweful team to further figure it out.

Offense gets a B+ - Yes, very high rating for a team that had five turnovers, but I was happy to see them run the offense that made them so successful last year.  Lots and lots of misdirection plays.  I have no idea how many times Juice fulled me on his handoffs.  He does such a great job of selling those fake handoffs.  If they continue to play the offense like that, the points will continue to flow.  Just stop turning it over.

Defense gets a C - Overall it was better, but then against, EIU isn't Missouri.  Travorus Bess could have played for Missouri though.  Good lord, he embarrassed us (15 carries for 183).  Other than that, the Illini did well when they needed to.  That stop on 4th and one in the 2nd quarter when EIU was in the red zone was the games turning point.

Special Teams gets a B - Nice to see Matt Eller drill a 42 yarder with ease.  Hopefully he can continue to drill those three pointers.  And also nice to see Michael Cklamovski get it to the end zone a couple of times on the kickoff.  That is the best way to keep our suspect kickoff coverage from giving momentum back to out opponent.

1-1 is nice, but we will see how things go a couple of weeks from now at Penn State.  They looked good against Oregan State on Saturday.
