Prediction Standings and ILL-PSU Predictions

THOUGHTS ON ILL-OSU

Even though it was a loss, there are a lot of positives to take from Saturday's loss to Ohio State. One thing I learned is that the defense is better than I thought. I knew it had improved, but it looks like it has gotten a considerable amount better. If you take away the two long runs that Terrelle Pryor had, Ohio State only had around 200 yards of total offense. That's pretty impressive when you're facing the #2 team in the country. Heck, we even got a couple of interceptions! I almost forgot what one of those looked like.

On offense, I'd still like to see an improvement in the passing game, but I wasn't expecting too much against a team like Ohio State. I think Sheelhaase had an alright game. Not great, but alright. A couple of drops didn't help him. As expected it ended up being pretty difficult to run the ball when the passing game isn't there. Because of this, it turned out to be difficult to score points. Also got to cut down on the penalties. Some might have been iffy calls, but most came from mental lapses and and tackling too high.

PREDICTION STANDINGS

After three games, we have had predictions from almost 50 people. You guys are giving me a lot of work to do. I'm not complaining though. I have fun every week seeing how everyone stacks up after another game. As expected a lot of people picked the winner correctly, and we even had an correct score prediction. Illini82 became the first person this year to correctly predict a score. Also a couple others had the spread correct. Plus, we welcome back simulations from NCAA Football 2011. Mgoebel has decided to help us out with that since my copy of the game didn't last very long. Thanks again mgoebel. Most of us picked the Buckeyes, so most of the changes this week come in the score differential. Ohio State won 24-13, so the real score difference in Ohio State +11.

MY PREDICTION

PENN STATE 17 ILLINOIS 14

There's a good chance that Penn State won't be ranked going into next week's game. Penn State doesn't look as good as originally thought, and like Illinois, they are working in a freshman quarterback who at times has struggled.  I honestly think this is a game that Illinois can win, despite being an early 11 point underdog, but there is one big reason why I'm going with the Nittany Lions. This is Illinois' first true road game. They opened up the season on a neutral field, and have played there last three at home. This will be Nathan Sheelhaase's first true road game, and I don't know how he's going to handle it. I think he will be okay, but I don't know if he will take it up to the next level and help lead the team to victory.

Penn State QB Robert Bolden has already thrown six interceptions and hopefully Illinois can take advantage of it. If Illinois wants to win this game, this might be where it has to be won. I think the running game will have more success, but if Sheelhaase struggles passing, it could be another long day for the running game and the offense as a whole. If this game took place later in the season, I'd probably pick Illinois.

What do you guys think? Did the Illini do enough last week to make you think they have a chance against PSU? Did last week's performance mean nothing to you since it was still a loss? I want to hear from you and I want those predictions. Let's hope Illinois can get that record back above .500. Talk to you guys next week.

****I've received some e-mails today from people saying they can't leave comments which means they can't predict.  If you want, go ahead and send them to my e-mail address (tyoung@whms.com), and I will make sure your pick is included in the standings.  Sorry for the inconvenience.  Hopefully we can fix this problem soon.****
