PSU Thoughts, Standings, & IU Predictions

PSU Thoughts, Standings, & IU Predictions

So close…

Blog PhotoAfter ESPN shoved the 17 game Big Ten losing streak down our throats all game, it would have been fitting to break the streak in dramatic OT fashion.  But it was not to be.  Rather than be negative for another week, though, I’ll point out the marked improvement by the Illini in the second half, in particular the defensive unit that has been the subject of much criticism this year.  The team showed it could be competitive in tight spots on the road in the face of big offensive performances by the opponent (Belton and Robinson today).  The guys are not rolling over and calling it a year.  Clean up the little mistakes and shore up the red zone play, and the train could get back on the tracks.  Easier said than done, I know.  But I’m a glass half full guy.

Here's Coach Beckman's summation of today's contest...

Blog PhotoNow your weekly math lesson…

Twenty-two of our 27 pickers this week were on the money, with a trio of top dogs in the RSDT column.  Overall, DarrenAlman is our new leader, with Bwp 5P dropping ino a tie for second.  The standings are very tight with four games to go, so keep picking!

Time to take a jaunt to candy stripe country…

In reading what media reports I could find on IU football (see below for more), two weak spots that were mentioned were the defense and injury-plagued offensive line.  Coach Kevin Wilson commented this week on what’s needed to turn the defense around.

Strengths-wise, the squad leads the league in pass offense.  So don’t expect a low scoring affair.  The Illini offense will need to step up from its performance this week, but if you take the resiliency the O and B showed today combined with an IU squad that's still not an elite level, it gives me enough to go out on a limb…

My prediction:  Illinois 33, Indiana 30

Blog PhotoA side note about IU football.  I’ve said a couple times this year that the Hoosiers aren’t quite at the level that many of the talking heads are putting them at.  Yes, it’s an improved team that’s above par compared to Hoosier teams of recent past.  But I just don’t think they’re reached that breakthrough level yet.  There’s not a big buzz around the program nationally.  Case in point:  as I researched the team this week, my Google news searches for “Indiana Hoosiers Football” turned up nothing recent.  In fact, on gameday, the top hit was a story about the team dancing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.  On the team’s ESPN profile page, the featured video is about recruiting.  Yesterday, the two most recent articles of the team’s homepage were an announcement of the game captains and a Q and A with the strength coach.  And as I sifted through the articles of a couple Indiana newspapers, most of the IU sports articles were on…you guessed it…basketball.

Other odds n ends…

  • I’m a nostalgia guy, so I found these two Marching Illini videos from yesteryear to be pretty cool.  Any other good ones like that floating around?  Post ‘em here.
  • Speaking of marching bands…you’d have to be living in a cave not to notice how Ohio State’s has set a new standard this year.  Here’s a behind the scenes look at how they do it.
  • And just for fun, check out how a couple Big Ten coaches celebrated Halloween.

Indiana can score a ton of points quickly like nobody's business and we still have the same coaching staff and same players especially defensive coordinator and defensive players that cant coach or play. I am going walk-a-bout on this one. Coach Kevin Wilson  & The Hoosiers  45                 The other guy's  35

I believe it will be a defensive struggle until Illinois goes for a triple reverse on their own 1 yd line . But even thays not enough so Scheelhause throws into quintuple coverage on first down on OT. So.... Hurryin Hosers 42......Fighting Illness 38

Hey gang.  Just a reminder that we are NOT starting basketball picks this week.  I'm going to start that at the beginning of Big Ten season.

How soon I forget. scUM 67 Illinois 65 in 5 OTs in 2010. Don't know the highest scoring nonconference game info.

You're correct on the UM-UI game, but the nonconference record is really obscure.  The year is 1904 if that helps.
