Purdue thoughts, standings, & a look at the team upstate

Time to tear down Green Street…

Blog PhotoAll musical packages aside, I think we’re all happy to have the B1G losing streak monkey off our backs.  But this one, aside from Steve Hull continuing his stellar streak, still wasn’t the prettiest to watch.  And ironically, it was the unit that’s taken the most heat this year – the defense – that put the O & B over the top.  Zero Purdue points off four turnovers and Nathan Scheelhaase having ample time to throw probably has Tim Banks smiling for the first time in a while.

Speaking of smiling coaches…

And down the stretch the pickers come…

Blog PhotoSome nice RSDTs this week, with Gill52 taking top honors for nailing the margin of victory.  Twenty of 23 pickers this week correctly picked the victor.  Of the three who weren’t so lucky, it cost Bob Patterson the most, as he’s now dropped out of the lead dog pack.  That pack of 10-1 pickers is now at five, with DarrenAlman continuing to hold the top spot.  Mvillini has pulled into a tie for second.

And now…the end is near…

I think these two media outlets can sum up the season for the team upstate better than I can…

ESPN:  This dumpster fire of a season can’t end soon enough.

SB Nation:   Northwestern football is a Final Destination movie. You don't know how everybody's going to die, but you certainly know that they're going to die, and there's nothing any of them can do to stop it.

Get the picture?  Maybe seven straight losses – the longest program losing streak since 1998 – will make it clearer.  It just seems like luck isn’t on the Cats’ side, with Blog Photobounces not going their way and a slew of late game losses.  That’s led to a lack of confidence and tentative play calling from Coach Fitz.  Another blow came today vs. Michigan State, as QB Kain Colter was knocked out by a helmet to helmet hit, and as of this writing his status is unknown.

So…with all that being said, you can guess where I’m going with my pick.  Tim Beckman has played up the importance of the Illinois-team upstate rivalry since he got here, and that enthusiasm translates to the players.  A win and a 5-7 record will be exceeding expectations in my book and will get some heat off the coaching staff.  This one is big for the long term future of the program.

My prediction:  Illinois 28, The team upstate 17

Fun fact from the NU game notes:  the team had a peanut-free game in October to cater to those with peanut allergies.  I got nothing on that one.

Coming up next time:  thoughts on the team upstate, final standings, and a look ahead

Seniors -- hope you have all been proud to wear the Orange and Blue, and despite what's happened the past two years, you'll cherish this time in your lives as being as being the best time of your lives.Congratulations to you forgiving your best efforts all the time. That said, Wildcats 30, Illini 24.
