Football pick em week 12: Minnesota

Football pick em week 12: Minnesota

Look, not many expected the Illini to win this one.  But I hoped it would be competitive throughout.  The touchdown to make it 21-3 put an end to that talk.  Not to mention key plays didn’t go the Illini’s way.  Let’s just hope the good guys come out of this one as healthy as possible (more on that later).

To the numbers…

Blog PhotoNschne393 takes top honors this game, with all but four of you getting a W and 13 of you lodging single digit RSDTs.  And I gotta disagree with Florida Illini.  Brutus harassed me once on press row at an OSU basketball game, but on the whole he’s a cool dude.  In the overall standings, Bob Patterson remains our leader with a 26 point RSDT lead on bluk5.  Everyone listed in the overall standings could still finish in first…IF the Illini make a bowl.  If not, then the cutoff is 6-4, leaving rpillini and teachdacc out in the cold.

Ok, let’s break down the enigma wrapped in a riddle wrapped in a vest that is Minnesota.  The Gophers’ losses have been to decent to great teams, but they haven’t beaten anyone good either.  If nothing else, they’re playing inspired football under Jery Kill successor Tracy Claeys.  The good:  Mitch Leidner is playing well lately, with 250 pass yards in each of his last three games and two final drive comebacks this season.  Here’s coach Claeys on the dual threat Leidner.

Blog PhotoThe bad:  37% on third down.  And a thin offensive line has led to 15 sacks and an inconsistent run game.  Here are the Minny rush totals in last six games: 204, 74, 326, 65, 144, 33.  The coaching staff has tried to stem the tide by opening up the playbook a bit more and running outside the tackles.

I’m gonna lodge my pick here and stick with it. But if we find out mid-week that Fergy and Vaughn are either out or not a full strength, don’t expect this to come true.

My prediction: Illinois 28, Minnesota 14

Illini defense does their job, but Cubit's offense fails again.

Minnesota has played the #15, #3, and #5 teams the last 3 weeks tough and should have had one win.   Cold, wind will hamper our passing game unfortunately.   Hope I'm wrong and the Gophers are the Goofers.

Just don't think we can generate enough offense to beat a below average Minnesota team, with one of our running backs still on the bench. Close, but no cigar. Gophers 21, Illini 17. GO ILLINI !!

The Illini become bowl eligible after a late Wes Lunt TD pass to G-Mo gives them the victory!

Go Illini!!

The opening line was Minnesota by 7.5, it's now down to 3.5 which means the money is getting put on the Illini!

I think the team rallies for Cubit and becomes bowl eligible!

Illini 21

Minnesota 20

I'm almost mathematically eliminated from contention, might as well be optomistic!

Subterrainian rats - 20

Chiefs - 23

Leidner plays a pretty good game, but Ferguson is too much.  IL gets bowl eligible with a patented last second FG.

Pick to Click: Josh Ferguson - 141 total yds; 82 Rec yds; 2 TD.
