Football pick em week 13: Northwestern

Football pick em week 13: Northwestern

We’re in college hoops season, so I thought Bill’s commentary was appropriate for this highlight.

The momentum in this one shifted midway through the second quarter.  Brooks punched it in from 38 yards, Illinois went three and out with a bad punt, and Minny punched it in again at the goal line to end the half.  Sure, it was 21-20 in the third.  But it was the gophers’ game at that point.  The run game from the O & B was just not enough.

Blog PhotoNot many of you took home a W this game, but those who did had single digit RSDTs.  Nschne393 took top honors for the second week in a row.  Overall, Bob Patterson is still in the lead.  The standings only show those who are still in the running to take the top prize.

To the home of those guys who lose to the Packers…

Northwestern has posted an 8-2 mark for the first time since 1996, when coach Pat Fitzgerald was in uniform.  The team’s stats indicate an offense that’s balanced between the pass and the run, with talented tailback Justin Jackson getting a lion’s share of the carries. Clayton Thorson and Zack Oliver have both seen time at quarterback, with Thorson the starter today.  The QBs haven’t had a ton of protection though, with a lot of cats rotating through the offensive line.  So getting to Thorson will be key next week.

Defensively coming into today, NU was 12th in nation in points allowed (17.6)and had only given up five pass touchdowns. The cats have also thrived in close games this year and have won their last three games by a combined 11 points.

This one may come down to who is hungrier – Illinois looking to get to a bowl or NU looking to get to a new year’s day bowl?

My prediction:  Northwestern 23, Illinois 14

Blog PhotoBy the way, the former Illini football coach who shall not be named took a lot of heat in the law firm report on using Northwestern as a motivational tactic.  My take?  Big deal.  Coaches play up rivalries all the time.  If people are offended by the photo at right, they need to get a life.

Got a comment on the NU-UI rivalry?  Or got an opinion on the game being played in Chicago?  Leave it in a comment.  Next week may be the last blog of the season.

Hi Tim!   You may want to recompute my RSDT.  I believe I should be at 195.  I greatly appreciate the generous points though!

The overall standings only include those who are in the running to finish in first.

Tim have the standing and RSDT been updated?  I believe all the leaders should be 9-2 and different RSDT's.  I think what is showing is last weeks.

Haven't made a decision on that yet.

I see where VegasInsider has made NU (not NW as ESPN likes to call Northwestern University), a mere 3.5 point favorite.  Apparently they don't realize that, although technically a home game for the Illini, the game is played in Chicago's Soldier Field, about 10-15 miles from NU, versus about 150 miles from the UI.  I know it's a rivalry game and all that, but the #17 team in the country is favored by that little against a 5-6 team going nowhere?

With a comlete lack of any "red zone" offense, along with the worst pass defense in the history of college football, I, reluctantly, once again, have to pick against my Illini. Wildcats win this one, 21-6. GO ILLINI !!

Illinois     11      NU   1O.

illiniearl wrote on November 26, 2015 at 11:11 pm

It will be the usual end of regular season meltdown for the Cats.   Illini pulls together to take the "interim" out Coach Cubit's title as he is chosen as the new head coach, for a couple years anyway, and only because no decent coach would dear step foot on our dysfunctionally managed campus.   lliniearl vaults to the top of the leader's board to take the lead, at least until the no-name bowl anyway.

Chicago's team (NW): 10

Illinois' team (Illini): 38

Go Illini!!

It's great to see all the positivity for the game. I was going to pick NU, but you all helped me change my mind. I see a low scoring defensive battle with the final being:

Illini 13
NU 10

Illini go bowling, and sign Cubit.

Thanks Tim, for running this again, and I hope you run the basketball pool again.
