Weighing in on the assistants

To ask me a question about the staff during Saturday's chat, click here.

We don't know what Ron Zook has planned after Saturday for his assistant coaches. But from a financial standpoint, it won't apparently cost Illinois much to sever ties with members of his staff.

Based on contracts provided by the school, none of Zook's nine staff members have deals beyond Jan. 31, 2010. The coaches are working on renewable contracts that would start with another year on Feb. 1. The school has up to 30 days prior to Jan. 31 to not renew the contracts.

The highest paid coach on the staff is offensive coordinator Mike Schultz, who is paid $260,000 annually. Co-defensive coordinators Curt Mallory and Dan Disch are being paid $162,000 annually.
