For 30 days, we're ranking the nation's best teams, starting at the bottom.
No. 6: Oregon
Why I like the Ducks: Chip Kelly has got a whole bunch of guys back from a team that made it to the Rose Bowl. There are nine starters returning on offense and eight on defense. On offense, it will all start with tailback LaMichael James, who gained 1,546 yards and scored 14 touchdowns as a freshman. The team welcomes back three of its top four receivers and all five starting offensive linemen. There should be truck-sized holes for James. The top four tacklers are back on defense. And the entire secondary returns. Punter Jackson Rice is back after averaging 40.5 yards last season. The nonconference schedule has been toned down a bit. No Boise State and Utah.
Why I don't: With all of Jeremiah Masoli's off-the-field problems, there is little experience at quarterback. Nate Costa threw 33 passes in 2009, but he might not even be the starter. The Ducks are lucky they have James while the new quarterback figures it out. Sure, Oregon won 10 games last season, but four of the wins were by a touchdown or less. And the Ducks didn't look very good in the Rose Bowl. Oregon does have to play at Tennessee the second week of the season. And the Pac-10 schedule is nasty, with five road games. Three are Southern Cal, Cal and Oregon State.
