66 days to Camp Rantoul

For 30 days, we're ranking the nation's best teams, starting at the bottom.

No. 16: LSU

Why I like the Tigers: Though he has more than his share of critics, especially in his home state, Les Miles has proven to be a quality coach. Quarterback Jordan Jefferson returns after throwing for 2,166 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. He's got a top target in Terrance Toliver. Linebacker Kelvin Sheppard and end Sam Montgomery return from a defense that was 11th in the nation in points allowed. The best team on the schedule, defending national champion Alabama, visits Baton Rouge on Nov. 6.

Why I don't: The offense had issues upon issues upon issues last season, ranking 112th nationally in total offense. Jefferson is careful with the ball (just seven interceptions), but needs to be more consistent. The running game needs a major upgrade. Not sure who will provide it. With the Michigan job possibly in play again, there will be rumors about Miles looking north. That won't help with the locals. The nonconference schedule isn't easy, with games against North Carolina and West Virginia. In the SEC, the Tigers travel to Florida and Auburn.

Tomorrow: No. 15

This one smells like the usual SEC banner-waving. The team has an inconsistent offense and a tough non-conference schedule (unlike many SEC teams).

This will likely be another SEC team that is ranked before the season and nowhere to be found at the end of the season. There are usually two or three of those every year -- funny how that works.
