No. 44: Jack Ramsey, defensive back.
Why he's important: A high school quarterback at Chicago Simeon, Ramsey has been moved around during his Illinois career. But he might have sound his place in the secondary. Working with first-year assistant Mike Gillhamer, Ramsey has the benefit of learning from a longtime NFL assistant coach. His willingness to move to cornerback in 2010 because of the need there helps his cause. So does his athletic ability. If Ramsey picks off a pass, his running skills take over. He has also worked in the past as a punt returner and will again be given the chance to bring back kicks. The first three Illinois cornerbacks are setttled (Terry Hawthorne, Tavon Wilson and Justin Green). But to get through a long season, the Illini coaches will be counting on help from Ramsey.
Fast fact: High school teammate of New Orleans Saints draftee Martez Wilson threw 20 touchdown passes as a prep senior. He's looking for his first college score.
