No. 42: Ta'jarvis Fuller, star.

Why he's important: The freshman, a January enrollee, made a good first impression on the new Illinois coaches. He moved to second on the depth chart at the star position, a hybrid linebacker/safety. Ashante Williams is the starter after finishing the 2011 season strong. Fuller was at his best during the spring game, recording seven tackles and breaking up a pass. Coach Tim Beckman called him one of the pleasant surprises of the scrimmage. The Fort Myers, Fla., product had a big senior season for Dunbar High School, finishing with 166 tackles, six sacks and five forced fumbles.

Fast fact: The Rivals.com three-star recruit had more than 15 scholarship offers, including Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, UCLA and Louisville.

Tomorrow: No. 41
