Not all football fields are created equally.
The playing surface, of course, is uniform but there's plenty of variation in the amenities.
I happen to have a special fondness for Gaines Field, at Mattoon High School. I returned there again on Friday to watch the home team turn back Danville in a Big 12 Conference contest.
The field features a 25-second clock on the right side of each end zone. It's a great benefit for coaches, players and fans alike to be able to tell if the offensive team can get its play off before a penalty is called.
Mattoon tried to milk the clock during the fourth quarter as it protected a 27-6 lead. Third-year varsity quarterback Jeremy Jordan twice accepted a snap as the 25-second clock showed :01 left.
Very few area schools have a 25-second clock in full public view. Perhaps it's time a few booster clubs took up this project as their next venture.
