Two for the show

We learned on Saturday that Westville's Caleb Pratt is more than a good football player.

He can make some pretty good predictions, too.

"I called it last year," said Pratt, moments after the Tigers wrapped up a 27-19 Class 2A semifinal victory over Casey-Westfield. "When we were in the locker room last year at state, I said, 'Don't worry, Coach. We'll be back.'"

Pratt was right. The Tigers will return to Memorial Stadium the day after Thanksgiving for the 1 p.m. championship game against unbeaten Dakota. Last year, an undefeated Maroa-Forsyth squad ended the Tigers' school-record run of victories at 13 in the finals.

Again this season, coach Guy Goodlove's team hasn't lost.

Tuscola's John Wienke will be focused on helping his Warriors repeat as Class 1A state champs, but he'll be paying some attention to the goings-on at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Reports are that head coach Lloyd Carr will announce his retirement on Monday. When contacted by The News-Gazette's Marcus Jackson, Wienke indicated he's still committed to Michigan, but he'll be paying attention to see who the Wolverines hire as their next head coach.

Tuscola will go against Galena in the 1A title game, which will start Friday's four-game program at 10 a.m.

It's great to see the area representation at state and we hope -- regardless of the outcomes -- that Westville and Tuscola play their best games of the season in the finales.
