What a start

The first day of the IHSA volleyball state tournament, in Normal, is over and the overall result is what you'd hope for such an elite level. Five of the day's eight semifinal matches required three sets to produce a winner.

Both of Friday's 1A matches and both 2A matches, as well as one in 4A, went to the fullest limit. That's what schools at this level should expect in order to advance.

One interesting sidenote is that the finalists in 3A and 4A are exactly the same as in 2009 with Cary-Grove and LaGrange Lyons battling in 4A, and Breese Mater Dei and Joliet Catholic the finalists in 3A. In 2A, there is also one championship-match repeater: Chicago Christian.
