Checkin' out Comics Kingdom

I haven't really had the chance to surf (or "serf" depending on your punny bone) through the Comics Kingdom portion of The News-Gazette's website.

Desperate for a blog for today, I'm going to do so right now ...

... and I'm back.

In no particular order, here are a few that I clicked around in. They were all ones that I recognized as reader suggestions from the comics poll:

Slylock Fox and Comics for Kids: My husband's grandmother has been cutting these out of a paper in southern Illinois and sending them to my oldest. While it's almost a whole page and this is just a single panel, she really enjoys them. It's also fanning the flames for a lifetime interest in the comics page, something Mommy is pretty excited about.

Arctic Circle: I love the drawing style of Alex Hallat's "polar" wonderland. The punchlines are worth a smile, but don't really feel laugh-out-loud kind of funny. Plus -- and I can't stress this enough, people -- polar bears live in the NORTH pole, while penguins live in the SOUTH pole. If there's one thing I teach my children before I leave this world, this is it.

Ollie and Quentin: Again, cute drawings from Piers Baker, but the worm as the bad guy is just a little too much for me. I can BELIEVE that the "cuddly" cat known as Bucky in Get Fuzzy is a vindictive and psychotic living thing. But not a worm with no mouth. I think that says something about me as a human being.

Bizarro: I had really considered this one to run in our regular pages until I found out it only came in a single, vertical panel. If you remember Brevity from a few years back, or you enjoyed Gary Larson's Far Side, Dan Piraro's work is one you'll want to check out. Some of them are more political than others, but I can say that I chuckled out loud at most of them.

Have you looked at Comics Kingdom lately? Check it out and let us know what you think.
