Use your initals to claim (and decorate early) a growing pumpkin

In some magazine or cookbook or decorating book, I once read the suggestion of lightly etching your initials into a pumpkin while it's growing.

My sister, the girl she mentors and I decided to try this yesterday in my parents' garden.

We took a paring knife and carved their first initials into small-ish pumpkins. The idea is that the initial grows with the pumpkin. (We also watered the vines, in an effort to compensate for the stress we caused the pumpkins.)

Consider these to be before photos, and I'll keep you updated on how it works. If it turns out well, it might turn into a really neat way to transition from summer into fall.
